Spirex - Demo

Spirex is the result of members of the legendary (but highly underrated) death metal band Darth Vader's Church joining forces with someone who called himself "Magic Juan" and making bizarre music. I'm not much of a fan of this sort of stuff usually, and to be honest, this isn't really an exception. It's very good for what it is, but what it is has little appeal to me. I grabbed it many moons ago because of the DVC connection. I'm  uploading it here because it's not so easy to find on the web, and I figured some people might actually appreciate it.

Abaddon - Funkin' Murderers

Abaddon were a local death metal band for me during my introduction to metal. Knowing that, it should be no surprise when I say I love this CD. Even in the face of the stupid "thug" interludes in some of the tracks, this CD has always stuck with me. The death metal contained on this disc is pretty damn good in my opinion, being slightly technical (as most was in the mid 90s), but not overwhelmingly so (like it was in the late 90s and early 2000s), and vocally varied, with the vocalist using both high screams and guttural growls.

Anyway, even though I professed my love of this album earlier, I don't really have a lot to say about it. It's not really reinventing the wheel or anything, and most of it's unique elements aren't really worth mentioning (aside from the stupid "thug" rants). Anyway, grab this while it's hot.

Ruinacre - S/T

Hardcore from Flagstaff Arizona. These guys had what I call the "southwest sound". A lot of bands from Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado all had a similar sound and these guys have it. It's sort of metallic, but not overly so, it's hard to describe unless you live around here and hear all the bands that I'm talking about.

Anyway, this stuff sort of blurs the line between fast metallic hardcore and power-violence. It's not quite what I think of as power-violence, but a lot of kids these days would probably call it that.

I'm pretty sure this would be cheap if you were to look around the web, Satan's Pimp did decent size presses of most of their releases, and a lot of them seem to have been forgotten by most people.

Tomsk-7 - Discography

I know very little about Tomsk-7. What I do know is that they were from Arizona, were active from the mid-90s until sometime shortly after 2000, and they released a total of 13 songs which comprise just under 15 min. of music.

Musically they fall into the southwestern hardcore sound that is hard to describe, but it's sort of a mix of hardcore, sludge, grind, and power-violence. Tomsk-7 was also female fronted, so it's a bit different than some of the other bands who had the "southwest" sound.

They didn't have an "official" discography release, so I compiled this one, which is sourced from my own rips of the vinyl the songs appeared on. I've included complete artwork for the release in case anyone gets the urge to burn the songs and print their own case (I did).

Sicarii - Within Your City Walls A Rising Storm

I've had a copy of this for about a decade now, and I never knew the album wasn't self-titled. The band only had screen printed cover versions on sale when they were on tour, and no place on that cover does it mention the album's actual title.

Anyway, it's a pretty good album. I remember when I set the show up, the band member in charge of booking said something like "we're similar to what would happen if Orchid and Catharsis melded together". That's fairly accurate I guess.

It's got elements of both Orchid and Catharsis. It's less chaotic than Orchid but does feature some of their chaotic bursts, and way less metal than Catharsis, but gives you the same overall feel as listening to them, all while being slightly less pretentious than either of those bands. It's been one of the records I've held on to even through multiple purges...so there's something about it that really does it for me. I don't know how other people would feel about it, so I don't know if I'd call it a lost gem or anything, but it's certainly a personal gem.

Speedwolf - Live in Albuquerque 7.22.12

This was the last show of their recent tour with Witchaven. The set was great, which is par for the course with Speedwolf, and the sound on this recording is great as well. The only really shitty thing about this show was that no one fucking showed up (and also that I had no money for merch, but that's more of a personal problem).

They do a Kiss cover, and a new, as of yet unreleased, song.
