The Beast - Discography

The Beast were a heavy metal band from NJ. Their debut EP, Power Metal, was released in 1983, though they are probably best known for their appearance on the Born to Metalize compilation in 1984. They followed that up with a 4 track demo in 1986. After that, the vocalist, Scott Ruth, went on to form Ripping Corpse. This collection is everything the band released to my knowledge.

Chapel - Demo 2008

I have had exactly two things on my active "want list" for the past few years, Rosenfeld's Pigs of the Empire and this demo by Canada's Chapel. I'm happy to say that as of today, Only Rosenfeld remains.

Chapel play black rock'n'roll, not dissimilar to, but completely better than Midnight. I put a LOT of hype into hearing the 3 songs from this beast that didn't appear on their Myspace, and I'm happy to say that they lived up to the hype. This demo is certainly one of my favorite releases of all time, and has been since I heard the 3 songs in early 2009.

This demo is their only recorded output to date, though I've been told they have just finished recording an LP that should be out sometime in the semi-near future.

Vomitus - Discography

I know very little about the history of these guys aside from the fact that they're from Arizona, recorded two tapes (one of which went unreleased), and a split 7" with Flux of Disorder, and are no longer active. What I can tell you is that their two tapes are some of the best crusty hardcore/grind/metal that has ever been overlooked by most people.

Until I met a local punk rock fan at a show, I had almost completely forgotten about this band. I have owned the split wiht Flux of Disorder for probably 12 years, and while I used to listen to it a lot, I hadn't heard it in about half a decade...then this kid showed up with a Vomitus t-shirt. "Holy shit, is that a Vomitus shirt?" I inquired, totally perplexed because very few people around here are familiar with them. Turns out this dude used to be roommates with some guys in the band. He turned me on to both these tapes (and hooked it up with a sweet Vomitus t-shirt). Since, these aren't particularly easy to find on the web, I figured I'd share it. This link contains both the released Sutimov tape, and the unreleased, unnamed tape. The songs from the split with Flux of Disorder are taken from these two tapes, so this is, in essence, their complete discography.

Excellent live recording of Diocletian from Rites of Darkness II on December 11th 2010. The recording was made by Vorfeed (www.vorfeed.net). It was originally in FLAC, but I've converted to 320kpbs MP3 to save space. I've included her original FLAC links though, so you have a choice.

This recording sounds much better than the official Diocletian split live tape that was released recently.

Nemo - 8-bit Grindography

There doesn't seem to be anyplace to easily find this grindcore band's discography. I'm fixing that. This release compiles all the songs that I'm aware of into one easy to grab release.

These guys played what could be called 8-bit grindcore, which makes liberal use of Atari style sounds mixed with ferocious drum machine grind.

Probably the best of the video-game styled bands in my opinion.

Living Impaired - Blossom and Decay

Living Impaired

Their debut album, World Keeps Spinning, was decent but nothing amazing, but the follow-up, Blossom and Decay is one of those albums that even though I have it in my collection, I frequently forget how good it really is. This is unique death metal with a hint of dissonant hardcore flavor. It sounds like it wouldn't work, but it does...really well. This used to be findable for dirt cheap in many second hand online shops, but I think with the recent (semi) explosion in obscure metal has caused a lot of places to charge stupid amounts for this. It also seem to not be available on the web in digital format except for on this blog, which surprised the hell out of me.

Speedwolf OOP releases...

Excellent US black speed punk. These two releases were requested by the guys over at Renrat's Metal Bazaar. It took me a while, but here they are.

Both of these (the Bark at the Poon demo tape, and the split 7" with The Hookers) are getting tougher to find, but I highly recommend that you pick them up if you see them around. They always come with stickers and other goodies.

Fukrot - Local legends.

Fukrot was one of the best bands to ever grace the Albuquerque local scene. The music is a sludgy, crust, hardcore assault. The guitarist manages to get the BEST guitar tone in this history of 6 stringed instruments.

They toured a few times, and played quite frequently around town. Yet to me, they where one of the few bands that played a lot that never got boring.

It was really a sad day when the drummer moved to Portland putting the band on indefinite hiatus. The drummer and his wife formed Murderess in Portland, who are another great band, but they don't have the awful muck (this is a positive thing...) of Fukrot, while the guitarist and bassist continued to make similar under the name Roñoso (Who I'll talk about in another post).

I still hope for a Fukrot reunion.

Nitre Pit - Lo!

Self-released album from 1994 from this San Francisco band whose members (Tasha Riggins, Aaron Russell, Greg Saunier, and Rob Fisk) went on to form Deerhoof, Weird Weeds, and 7 Year Rabbit Cycle.

The guitarist and vocalist Tasha, also played guitar in a hardcore/powerviolence band with me around 2000/2001. This is pretty experimental and weird, but it's top notch stuff.

Doomsday 1999

These guys are without question the best bunch of guys I ever set a show up for. Really excellent music as well. Sort of silly, but not a joke band.

I can't really say too much else, what they where doing was fairly unique though it's pretty solidly rooted in grindcore. Just give it a listen for yourself. The link below includes both their albums; Maniac on the Floor and Racist Unicorn.

Bloody Cross...

This stuff is RAW. It's nearly impossible to find, so deal with it.

Considered to be the first black metal band in Chile, Bloody Cross got their start in 1987 as The Morgue. The released one demo "Satan Tomorrow Attack" under than name before changing their moniker to Bloody Cross.

Their early stuff is pretty savage black thrash, but on the Godforsaken...Land full length they adopted sort of a Mayhem meets South American black thrash approach.

The broke up before releasing the second full length Satanas. They did release a promo for it however, which includes re-recordings of some of the stuff on the Satan Tomorrow Attack demo.

I have ripped all the tapes I have from this impossible to find band, and included a rip of Fear and Pain of God that has already made it's way around the blogs...5 in total.

Lantern - Virgin Taste of Damnation (Demo 2008)

Lantern formed from the ashes of Cacodaemon, who sound a bit more traditional than Lantern. I had believed that these had been long out of print, as the second demo which was released this year is already out of print...but was surprised to find a copy of this tape in a distro in France. This stuff has a sound all of it's own in my opinion. It's as moody as death metal can possibly get. If you could call a bands sound obscure, this would be that band and that sound. The overall volume on the mix is a bit low (I've fixed that problem in the mp3s found here on my blog), but the recording it self is solid.

I couldn't find this anywhere on the web, and multiple requests to have it uploaded where ignored, so when I got my copy, I promptly set out to digitize this stuff to share this amazing band. The band has a CD coming out either at the tail end of this year, or the beginning of next, so keep an eye on their website for more info on the upcoming CD.

Streetkunt - Shit Kunts, Shit Times

New Zealand seems to turning out a ton of great stuff in the last 5 or so years. This next recommendation is one of those gems from that area that never got passed the demo stage.

This band features a member of both Diocletian and Vassafor, though stylistically they couldn't be farther from each other. This stuff is filthy d-beat black metal. If you''re familiar with stuff like Malveillance or Vordr, then you have some idea what I'm talking about. The production on this is great for what it is, and the songs are catchy as hell. It includes a cover of Anti-Cimex's War Machine, and any Anti-Cimex cover is certainly a welcome one. This is definitely one of the gems from that area that got overshadowed by the members other bands.

Unfortunately this has been out of print for years, and isn't readily available online, which is why I decided to post it up here.

South America seems to be a hot spot for excellent black, Christ hating, thrash. This release however, stands head and shoulders above most recent South American black/thrash.

Formed in 2005 by members of Atomic Aggressor and Force of Darkness, Hades Archer play some savage, raw, black/thrash.There's little here that hasn't been done before, but the delivery of Hades Archer is of a caliber that is seldom reached. For those of you familiar with Force of Darkness, this stuff is much less thrashy, and quite a bit rawer. It's like someone took early Sodom and early Sarcofago and threw it in a blender.

I was originally sort of put off by the album title, but when the release is this good, you can call it whatever you want I guess. This is a short one, blazing by in just under 15 min. 3 of which are spent on a cover of Sodom's Pretenders to the Throne, which is very well done. Definitely one of the best things to come from South America, a place with a fairly decent amount of good releases.

Black Death - Black Death

My next recommendation will go down in history as being one of the first all black heavy metal bands. Of course, I could only be speaking of Black Death.

These guys are more than just a racial milestone in metal though, their album is full of way above average heavy metal. In fact, this is one of my 50 favorite metal albums of all time, and one of the only heavy metal records to make that list. Everything about this album is done just right. The vocals are great, the guitar is great, etc. I can't recommend this stuff enough...really.

This stuff is beyond impossible to find a real copy of, and a download isn't easy to track down either because the name Black Death brings up just about every metal blog post ever. I'm hoping that uploading this will expose the band to more people. I've heard that Auburn Records wants to reissue this, so I'm hoping that actually happens, as this is one of the few metal albums to make my top 50 that I don't actually own.

Malaphar - Arisen from Flame

These guys are probably most famous for being the backing live band for Alex Schulze and Naked Whipper, but there music easily stands on it's own. This is top quality OSDM that has been relegated to literal obscurity (they have 15 listeners and less than 100 total listens on last.fm, and about 20 of those listens are mine). Musicially this is excellent, dark, evil sounding old school death metal. Good riffs, good vocals, and what I think is excellent drumming (I don't know why, but it stood out to me). The recording is also of good quality for a nearly 20 year old demo.

The demo is pretty tough to find, though if you check my blog I'm sure it will illuminate the path. I've also turned the entire Arisen from Flame demo into YouTube videos for preview purposes, as there was no way to check them out short of blindly downloading the demo before that.

Satan's Satyrs - Demo 2010

I acquired this demo on CD-R at the end of last year, before it was decided that a tape release was best. It's a great mix of black/punk-n-roll.

I don't know what the band plans to do next, but I'm looking forward to it, as this has been one of my top demos of the last year. The only shortcoming is that it's only 3 songs. I wish it was longer. Everything else about this is perfect for the style.

Creepout - Discography

Creepout is Japan's finest Integrity worship. They even went as far as using a modified Asian version of the Integrity skull as their logo.

Musically, they are pretty much exactly what you would expect, metallic hardcore. Though lyrically they don't seem to follow in the typical "holy terror" footsteps, instead opting for more of a typical "tough guy" meets "youth crew" approach in that area. They do have a few songs that would fit the holy terror genre though. I can easily overlook the silly lyrics in part because they aren't native English speakers, and so they just go with what they know, but mostly because this album rages.

Once again, a quick internet search tuned up nothing, so this is, as far as I know, another R'lyeh Liberation Front exclusive...for now.

Mace - The Process of Elimination and The Evil in Good

Mace is a sadly overlooked crossover band that was active from the early to late 80's. Their first album, The Process of Elimination, was released in 1985 on Coma records. It was a pretty solid, but very strange, crossover thrash record.

Their second LP, The Evil in Good, released in 1987 on Black Dragon Records marked a shift to a more metal approach being noticeably more rooted in the thrash genre, though still including some punk/crossover elements. This album while being more metal for sure, is also stranger, and slightly more dark.

Their guitar player would latter have a hand in killing metal in the early 90's when he became a record producer and produced some awful grunge records (Pearl Jam being the biggest offender...to his credit he also did records for Alice in Chains and Blind Melon...).

Dominus - A View To The Dim

Before they became Vol-beat (what a shitty progression...), or even released a garbage death-n-roll record (I like death-n-roll...I didn't like their take on it...), Dominus put out a super crushing, and by all accounts, excellent death metal album. View to the Dim is unrelenting. The drums pound away, the guitar is heavy, and the vocals fierce. You'd think from the cover art, they'd be all about vikings, and other lame crap, and you'd be partially right. They do have some songs about vikings, but they also have songs about the occult and some with anti-religious overtones...so you're not in for some Amon Amarth style lyrical subject suckfest. Some of the members where also in Panzerchrist and Illdisposed.

Adorior - Author of Incest

Adorior, hailing from the UK, are one of the only female fronted black thrash bands that I know of. This, their second LP, released in 2005, and it's far superior to their first in terms of songwriting and sound. Most of the lyrics are pretty depraved and perverse, though not quite in the realm of some of Nuclear Death's more bizarre stuff, though rapidly approaching it...and definitely more misanthropic in nature.

This band features members of Razor of Occam, Destroyer 666, and Grave Miasma.

Morbid Angel - Evil Demos

This bootleg contains 3 rehearsal demos from '86 and '87, plus the Thy Kingdom Come studio demo. The rehearsal stuff is cool, though some of it is pretty raw. Nothing that I personally found to be unlistemable, but others may have a tough time dealing with the raw, live, and unedited quality of some of these tracks.

I grabbed this just to have the Thy Kingdom Come demo/single on CD, since it's terrific stuff. But was surprised to find that there's at least one track on here which didn't make it on to any of the full lengths to my knowledge. Entitled Re-animator's Mutilations, it appears only one one of the rehearsal demos, there's a chance that it's an early version of another song, but I don't seem to recall it sounding very familiar. There's also an unnamed track, and I can't be assed to figure out if it's on an album or not.

Other than that it's got quite a few raw MA favorites on it, and it's got Mike Browning on drums.

Pseudogod - Triumphus Serpentis Magni

I first heard Pseudogod not too long ago, on a 4 way split. They only had two songs, but they where far and away the best stuff on the CD. That's not to say the rest was bad, because it's not, but Pseudogod where able to completely blow away 3 other excellent bands.

Shortly after I'd listened to them, I found out that their demo was getting re-issued on Satanic Skinhead Productions, and that this mLP was coming out.

I grabbed this as soon as it hit US soil, and it's been in heavy rotation (getting multiple plays per day) since it arrived.

This will be in my list of top albums of 2010, probably near the top. I looked around for this on the internet and it's nowhere to be found, so for now, this is a R'lyeh Liberation Front exclusive.

Pressure - Beasts

This 7" was limited to 100 copies, and is the first recorded output from one of the best new Belgian hardcore bands. Belgium has cranked out some awesome hardcore, so that's a pretty decent compliment.

This stuff has some sludge sensibilities, but is still rooted firmly in the holy terror hardcore style.

I got this 7" when I saw them play live. It was a great show.

Hanging Rotten - Your Cheatin' Heart

Grind/sludge hybrid, featuring members of the mighty Seven Foot Spleen. This is a great album that gets no attention, hopefully some people will download this and give it a chance, as it's pretty good. Especially side B.

Ripping Corpse - Unreleased 1992 Album

I love Dreaming With The Dead, it's without question one of my favorite death metal albums of all time. This, could have been even better...if only it was completed and released.

What we have here are mostly finished tracks, the drums, guitars, and bass are all present, but it's lacking vocals. Some of the promo tracks (which are included) have vocals, but none of the actual album tracks got to that point.

Aside from the 1992 promo tracks (1-3), none of the tracks have names.

Gurkkhas - Engraved in Blood, Flesh, and Souls

Gurkkhas, who hail from France, play fantastic death metal. They could hardly be accused of reinventing the wheel, and they certainly aren't overly technical, but they use the tried and true death metal techniques in interesting new ways.

I've noticed this stuff is pretty obscure, and I can't figure for the life of me why that is...it's certainly quality stuff. It's on Massacre Records, so it's not like it's got zero distribution or anything...although Massacre doesn't mention it at all in it's past releases...for whatever reason, it just seems to have been brushed aside and overlooked.

King's-Evil - Deletion of Humanoise

The Japanese metal scene has always produced some exceptional bands, and King's-Evil are no exception. Their style of death/thrash brings all the great things about the genre to the table...it's got catchy riffs, scathing vocals, and good drumming. Deletion of Humanoise, released in 2001 marks the only full length in their twenty one year career...which is a shame, because if this album is any indication of things that could have been, or things to come, this band had the potential to have several classic thrash records under their belts by now.

Luckily for us, most of them play in Ritual Carnage, who's first two albums rule just as much.
